The Formula Behind the Answer
Birth year equals the reference year minus the age, minus one more if the birthday has not yet happened in the reference year. That extra step is why people born in late December are so often listed with the wrong birth year in quick calculations. The birth year calculator always shows which case it used.
The date range method works the same way. The latest possible birth date is exactly that many years before the recorded date, and the earliest is one day after the date a year earlier still. Every age covers a 365 or 366 day window of possible birthdays.
