Gen Z Years: When Generation Z Starts and Ends
Gen Z years run from 1997 to 2012 under the definition used by the Pew Research Center, the most widely quoted source in the United States. That puts the generation between the ages of 14 and 29 in 2026, counting people who have already had their birthday this year. Anyone born in 1997 is the oldest member, and anyone born in 2012 is the youngest.
Yes, 2000 is a Gen Z year.
Generation Z
Born 1997 to 2012. Ages 14 to 29 in 2026.
2000 is year 4 of 16 in this generation.
Other researchers move the edges by a year or two, so you will see Gen Z start in 1995 or 1996 on some websites. The core Gen Z years, roughly 1998 to 2010, are the same in almost every source. This page explains where the boundaries come from, what the label means, and how to check your own birth year.

Gen Z Age Range in 2026
The oldest Gen Z adults turn 29 in 2026, so many now have careers, mortgages and children of their own. The youngest members turn 14, which means part of the generation is still in middle school. That spread is one reason broad claims about Gen Z often fit only half the group.
In 2027 the oldest members reach 30, a milestone that tends to change how the media writes about a generation. Millennials went through the same shift around 2011, when the first of them left their twenties. You can find the age for any single birth year on its own page in the born in year index.

Why Pew Chose 1997 and 2012
Pew ended the Millennial generation in 1996 so that every Millennial was at least five years old during the September 11 attacks and could remember them. Children born from 1997 onward have little or no memory of that day, which marked a natural starting line for Gen Z years. The group also grew up after the internet had already become part of daily life.
The end year of 2012 is described by Pew as provisional rather than final. Researchers usually wait until a group is older before fixing its last birth year, because formative events show up in hindsight. For now, most US sources end the Gen Z years in 2012 and place children born from 2013 in Generation Alpha.
How Pew set the edges
- 1996Last Millennial year, old enough to remember September 11, 2001
- 1997First Gen Z year
- 2007First iPhone launches, the oldest members are 10
- 2012Provisional last Gen Z year
- 2013Generation Alpha begins
Other Definitions of Generation Z
Mark McCrindle, the Australian researcher who later named Generation Alpha, places Gen Z between 1995 and 2009. Some marketing firms start the generation in 1996, and a few end it as late as 2015. These choices often depend on the country, since formative events and technology adoption did not happen everywhere at the same time.
The gap between definitions of the Gen Z years matters most for people born in 1995, 1996 and 2010 to 2012. Someone born in 1996 is a Millennial to Pew and a member of Gen Z to McCrindle. If you are on that edge, the term Zillennial describes your position better than either label.

Where the Name Generation Z Came From
The name simply continues the alphabet after Generation X and Generation Y, the label first used for Millennials. Several alternatives competed for a while, including iGen, popularized by psychologist Jean Twenge in her 2017 book, and Homeland Generation, proposed by William Strauss and Neil Howe. Generation Z won because it was easy to understand.
The nickname Zoomers appeared later as a play on Boomers and became common online around 2019 and 2020. Video calls on Zoom during the pandemic gave the word a second meaning for students attending class from home. Today Gen Z and Zoomers are used almost interchangeably in casual writing.

What Shaped Generation Z
Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with smartphones and social media from childhood. The first iPhone launched in 2007, when the oldest members were 10, so most of the group cannot remember life before mobile internet. Pew research also describes Gen Z as the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in American history.
The COVID 19 pandemic hit while many members were in school or starting their first jobs. Remote classes, delayed graduations and a sudden change in the job market shaped their early adult years. Those shared experiences are what tie Gen Z years together more than any exact birth date.
