Korean Age Calculator

This Korean age calculator shows three numbers side by side: your international age, your traditional Korean age and your Korean year age. Enter your date of birth and the tool works out each one for today or for any date you choose. Someone born on December 31, 2025 is 0 in international age on October 18, 2026, but 2 in traditional Korean age and 1 in year age.

That gap surprises most people the first time they see it. South Korea counted ages differently from most of the world for centuries, and the old habit still shows up in daily conversation. Knowing all three numbers helps when you read Korean media, fill out a form or talk with Korean friends and family.

How to Use the Korean Age Calculator

Type your date of birth and leave the second date as today, or change it to see your age on another day. The Korean age calculator returns international age first, since that is now the legal standard in Korea. Traditional Korean age and year age appear underneath, each with a short note on where it is still used.

If you only know your birth year, you can still get the traditional Korean age and the year age, because neither depends on the birthday. International age needs the full date, since it changes on the birthday itself. The result updates instantly when you change either date.

Three steps

  1. 1Enter the date of birthThe year alone gives Korean age and year age.
  2. 2Change the date if neededCheck the age on any past or future day.
  3. 3Read all three agesInternational age first, as the legal standard.

How Traditional Korean Age Works

Under the traditional system, a baby is 1 year old on the day of birth, and everyone adds a year on January 1 rather than on their birthday. The formula is simple: current year minus birth year, plus one. In 2026, anyone born in 2000 is 27 in traditional Korean age, no matter which month they were born in.

The system meant a child born in late December could turn 2 within days of birth. Common explanations for counting from 1 include the time spent in the womb and the use of ordinal numbers for years of life. Historically some families used the Lunar New Year instead of January 1 as the day everyone aged.

The 2023 Change to International Age

On June 28, 2023, amendments to South Korea's Civil Act and administrative laws took effect, making international age the standard for legal and official documents. Most South Koreans became one or two years younger on paper overnight. The government said the change would reduce confusion in contracts, medical care and public services.

International age, called man nai in Korean, counts from 0 at birth and adds a year on each birthday, the same way as in the United States. A Korean age calculator built for use after 2023 therefore treats international age as the main result. Traditional Korean age is still common in casual speech, especially among older people.

Where Year Age Still Applies

Some Korean laws kept the year age system, which is the current year minus the birth year with no extra year added. Military service timing, the minimum age for buying alcohol and tobacco, and school entry are commonly cited examples. Under year age, everyone born in the same calendar year reaches a new age together on January 1.

That is why people born in the same year can buy alcohol together from January 1 of the year they turn 19 in year age. It keeps classmates and friends of the same birth year on one schedule. The Korean age calculator shows year age separately so you can check these rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Korean age?

Subtract your birth year from the current year and add one. In 2026, someone born in 1995 has a traditional Korean age of 32. Your international age may be one or two years lower.

Does South Korea still use Korean age?

Not for official purposes since June 28, 2023, when international age became the legal standard. Many people still use Korean age in conversation. A few laws use year age instead.

What is year age in Korea?

Year age is the current year minus the birth year, without adding one. It is used for some rules, including military service and the legal age to buy alcohol. Everyone born in the same year shares the same year age.

Why are Korean ages higher than international ages?

Traditional Korean age starts at 1 at birth and adds a year every January 1. International age starts at 0 and changes only on the birthday. The difference can be one or two years.

What is my Korean age if I was born in 2000?

In 2026, someone born in 2000 has a traditional Korean age of 27. Their year age is 26, and their international age is 25 or 26 depending on the birthday. The Korean age calculator shows all three.
